Rock climbing is exciting, adventurous, and intense! It requires concentration, determination, and physical exertion. Climbing outside of the gym or away from one's home area can bring all kinds of unforeseen challenges and risks. Hiring a skilled guide relieves the stresses that are inherent in trying to figure it all out.

My home area, Boulder, Colorado, is one of the premier rock climbing areas in the world. I spend a majority of the year guiding in the Boulder area. Outside of Boulder, I consistently guide in The Tetons (WY), Red Rock Canyon (NV), Moab (UT), Joshua Tree (CA), Smith Rock (OR), and Vedauwoo (WY). Other rock climbing areas I have guided are El Frey and Piedra Parada (Argentina), North Carolina, Mt Charleston (NV), and a few other places here and there. Estes Park & Boulder, Colorado


"Eldo" offers traditional climbing of all grades. The climbing includes face, crack, and some slab climbing. Routes are from 1 to 7 pitches long. There are classics from 5.5 to 5.13.

Approach time: 1 to 35 minutes.


Boulder Canyon includes routes on the many crags that line the 2-lane road from Boulder to Nederland. Routes range from 5.5. to 5.14, and from 1 to 4 pitches. Routes are crack, face, and slab, on solid granite.

Approach time: 0 to 10 minutes.


Wow! These are a must-do! The Flatirons have routes of all grades, but the true classics are the long slab routes ranging from 5.4 to 5.8. Some routes are over 10 pitches long. The views of Boulder and the Indian Peaks are amazing.

Approach time: 20 to 45 minutes.


Bordering the town of Estes Park, "Lumpy" offers traditional multi-pitch climbing. The classic guide routes are from 5.6 to 5.10, 3 to 7 pitches. The granite is of high quality, and most of the routes involve crack climbing.

Approach time: 45 mins to 1.5 Hours.

OTHER BOULDER AREAS: Clear Creek Canyon (sport climbing) and the South Platte Area (traditional face, slab, and crack climbing).


Moab is a desert recreation paradise that offers pleasant temperatures and conditions through the fall, winter, and spring. Climb classics such as Castleton Tower, Ancient Art, Wallstreet, Looking Glass Arch, and Indian Creek. October to November and February to April are the best times to climb.

Approach Time: 1min to 2hrs


"Red Rocks" is a rock climbing Mecca located 1 hour from the Las Vegas Strip. Rock climbs are 1 to 16 pitches, 5.6 to 5.14. Climbs are traditional and sport, crack, face, and slab. Beautiful!!! It is great to go climbing in the desert and then catch a Cirque de Soleil show in town.

Approach Time: 10 mins to 2 hours


Dr. Seuss's artistic influence is readily apparent when climbing in "J-Tree." "Josh" is an adult's playground. Routes range from 5.6 to 5.14 and from 1 to 5 pitches, though most are 1 pitch. The cracks are classic, the slabs are wavy and wild, and the face climbs are stout.

Approach Time: 1 to 15 mins
